Human error during the filling of a delivery truck has led to the spill of some 96 litres of heating fuel at a tank farm in Baker Lake, Nunavut, downstream from the raw water intake for the Baker Lake water treatment plant.

The contractor responsible for the April 4 fuel spill is working under the direction of the regulator, the Department of Environment, to contain the spill and remediate the area, according to the new Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Nunavut, known as TIN.

Baker Lake is a hamlet in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut.

Due to a previous mechanical issue at the water treatment plant, territory officials had issued a boil water advisory on February 26, which will now remain in place as water sample analysis of both raw and treated drinking water is completed by a qualified independent laboratory.

“While hydrocarbon testing is a part of routine water sample testing, TIN has increased monitoring during remediation efforts,” the department’s Petroleum Products Division announced in a statement.

The Department of Health will notify the community when the boil water advisory is lifted.
