A water services company has been fined $18,000 for two violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act while serving as the operating authority of a drinking water system for the Ontario Township of Oro-Medonte.

Tapped In Consulting Inc. was convicted of failing to ensure that every operator held proper certification, as well as failing to meet sampling and testing requirements, according to a court bulletin from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.

From 2007 to 2023, the water services company was the operating authority that supplied water to Kempenfelt Village’s two multi-unit townhome buildings, a non-municipal, year-round, residential system.

During a ministry inspection in June 2022, staff reviewed logbook entries for the system dated between January 2021 and June 2022. The entries indicated that “two different operators conducted operational checks and made adjustments to the system despite not holding the necessary certification,” according to the court bulletin.

Tests were required every two weeks for bacteria, including E. coli and total coliforms.

Following the conviction, the company must also pay a victim fine surcharge of $4,500 within one year.
