Englobe Corporation has announced the acquisition of Applied Aquatic Research Ltd., an environmental consultancy known for its work across Western Canada’s energy and resources sector.
Founded in 1996, Applied Aquatic Research (AAR) provides services in aquatics, fisheries, wildlife, archaeology, botany and geographic information systems (GIS).
The acquisition is expected to strengthen Englobe’s environmental services platform in Western Canada — particularly in Alberta — and enhance its ability to support projects across the full asset lifecycle, from regulatory approvals through operations, closure and site rehabilitation.
The deal highlights the growing importance of early-stage environmental expertise in major infrastructure, construction and resource development projects. Englobe said AAR’s capabilities will strengthen proactive client engagement and improve project outcomes across all phases of development.

While AAR’s core work has focused on energy and resources, its technical expertise is expected to broaden Englobe’s reach into sectors including mining, renewable energy, northern development and infrastructure, as well as projects involving First Nations communities. The combined organization is also positioned to support increasing demand for responsibly sourced critical minerals tied to Canada’s energy transition.
Since 2019, Englobe has expanded its Western Canadian workforce to more than 1,000 employees. The addition of AAR brings in professionals aimed at reinforcing technical capacity, leadership succession and long-term operational sustainability.
Following the acquisition, Tom Boag will continue to lead AAR alongside its existing leadership team, and the firm will operate as an Englobe partner company.
Headquartered in Laval, Quebec, Englobe is a Canadian engineering and environmental services firm with more than 3,700 employees nationwide. The company provides services ranging from engineering design and inspection to environmental consulting and remediation.
Applied Aquatic Research, based in Calgary, provides environmental planning, monitoring, spill response and water-related services, including hydrology and hydrogeology, across Western and Northern Canada.
