Two notable business developments in the water sector this month include U.S.-based Core & Main’s acquisition of water, wastewater and storm drainage product distributor Canada Waterworks, as well as the acquisition of Ontario-based consultancy Ecometrix by France-based Egis.

According to Egis, the September acquisition of Ecometrix enhances the company’s environmental expertise, doubling the firm’s environmental presence and building on what it describes as the ability to deliver integrated solutions in nuclear, mining and water resources.

In a statement covering the acquisition, Egis leaders noted that Ecometrix will enable the company to offer more comprehensive in-house water resource services, expanding the firm’s capabilities to include larger industrial applications.

“This new acquisition continues the firm’s growth in Canada,” announced Egis CEO Greg Northcott in a statement. “The addition supports our strategic objective of growing our nuclear practice and environmental services, enabling us to provide a full spectrum of environmental services.”

Founded in 2004, Ecometrix has some 60 staff at its office in Mississauga, Ontario, where the company focused on supporting permitting and regulatory compliance to the mining, nuclear, government, and private sector. The company merged with Calder Engineering Ltd. in 2021.

Ecometrix CEO Bruce Rodgers called the acquisition an “exciting opportunity” and stated that it “fuels our collective growth and considerably enhances the services that we can provide to our clients.”

For Core & Main, based in St. Louis, Missouri, the September acquisition covers all the assets of Canada Waterworks Inc. and Canada Waterworks Ottawa Inc., founded in 2014 with locations in Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton.

“Core & Main provides Canada Waterworks a strong level of support to allow us to continue to operate as a local, Canada-based business, enhancing what we can offer our customers,” announced Canada Waterworks President and CFO Guenther Koehler in a statement. “We appreciate that Core & Main has a culture that matches our own, with a focus on entrepreneurial spirit, associate support and customer focus.”

Core & Main, which operates some 370 branches across the U.S., is a specialized distributor of water, wastewater, storm drainage and fire protection products, and related services. President Brad Cowles stated that the new acquisition represents the “next step in building the Core & Main platform in Canada” and is a “complement to the existing footprint Core & Main has in the province.”
