The cities of Welland and Greater Sudbury are recipients of the latest investments under Ontario’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund.

Ontario has approved funding of $20.4 million for Welland’s Ontario Road Wastewater Trunk Sewer Expansion and Water Infrastructure Improvements project, which will support Welland’s growing population by improving water services and enabling sustainable growth for future housing, commercial, and industrial developments.

The project will include construction of a new 2.4-kilometre wastewater trunk sewer from the Ontario Road sewage pumping station to King Street, alongside the replacement of 1.3 kilometres of aging cast iron watermain between Southworth Street and King Street.

“This funding is a considerable investment for our community,” said Welland Mayor Frank Campion in a statement. “Expanding the water and wastewater infrastructure will not only improve essential services but also unlock future housing opportunities. As Welland continues to grow, this project lays the groundwork for a more vibrant, sustainable city.”

Construction is expected to begin in January 2025, with a targeted completion date in December 2026.

The Ontario government is also investing up to $34.9 million in water infrastructure to help enable the construction of 3,300 new homes in the City of Greater Sudbury. The city will use the funding to upgrade components of the Lively-Walden Wastewater System, including lift station and water collection system improvements, as well as the expansion of the Walden Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“It will unlock 585 housing units immediately and pave the way for thousands more, helping us continue to exceed our housing targets as our city experiences record growth,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre in a statement. “This investment means more than just new homes; it ensures that families can thrive, businesses can expand and Greater Sudbury will remain a hub for talent and opportunity.”

The Municipality of Bluewater has also received an investment under Ontario’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund. An $8.3-million grant will expand the Bayfield Wastewater treatment facility. The expansion is expected to cost $11.4 million and construction is set to begin in early 2025 and finish by spring 2027.

The expansion will allow for the development of up to 500 new housing units in Bayfield and is seen as essential for meeting the area’s housing demands and supporting long-term growth in Bluewater.
