NX Filtration has been awarded a membrane replacement project by Canadian water technology company H2O Innovation to retrofit an existing municipal drinking water treatment plant in Quebec with new ultrafiltration membranes.
The project will replace nearly 200 legacy ultrafiltration membrane modules with NX Filtration’s direct replacement hollow fibre membrane technology, allowing the facility to upgrade its treatment system without major modifications to existing infrastructure.
According to the companies, the retrofit is intended to improve operational performance, reliability and water quality while maintaining compatibility with the plant’s existing ultrafiltration system. By using replacement modules designed to fit the current configuration, the upgrade is expected to extend the system’s service life while minimizing construction work and downtime.
The membrane replacement is designed to provide a straightforward upgrade path that improves treatment performance while preserving the plant’s existing layout.

“This project demonstrates how utilities can significantly improve performance without the need for complex system changes,” said Esther Victoria Guedez, country manager North America at NX Filtration, in a statement.
Martin Bordeleau of H2O Innovation said the retrofit will allow the company to enhance plant performance while reducing disruption during installation.
“We are pleased to partner with NX Filtration on this retrofit project,” Bordeleau said in a statement. “Their direct replacement solution allows us to deliver immediate performance improvements to our customer while minimizing downtime and ensuring a smooth transition within the existing plant configuration.”
The companies said the project reflects growing demand for membrane replacement solutions that enable municipalities to modernize aging treatment assets without replacing entire systems. By retrofitting existing ultrafiltration installations with newer membrane technology, utilities can improve treatment performance and address evolving water quality requirements while reducing capital costs associated with major infrastructure upgrades.
Montreal-based H2O Innovation provides membrane technologies, system design, and operation and maintenance services for municipal, industrial and commercial water and wastewater treatment facilities. NX Filtration, headquartered in the Netherlands, manufactures hollow fibre membrane technology for drinking water, wastewater and industrial water treatment applications.
