ABB launches integrated carbon capture measurement system to support industrial decarbonization

0

ABB has introduced its first fully integrated gas analyzer package designed specifically for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), aiming to help industrial operators monitor carbon dioxide streams and meet strict quality requirements across the carbon capture process.

The new system combines three existing ABB measurement technologies into a single, turnkey package capable of detecting impurities in captured CO₂ in real time. The integrated solution is intended to help industries such as cement, oil refining, power generation, waste-to-energy, bioenergy, liquefied natural gas and chemicals maintain compliance with purity standards while reducing emissions.

CCUS involves capturing carbon dioxide from industrial sources, transporting it and storing it underground or reusing it. However, even small amounts of contaminants, including hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, moisture and inert gases, can create operational challenges by increasing corrosion risk, affecting gas transport and potentially leading to pipeline rejection or regulatory non-compliance.

ABB’s new analyzer package combines its Sensi+ CCUS laser gas analyzer, GCP100 process gas chromatograph and ACF5000 CCUS Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analyzer. Together, the instruments provide continuous monitoring of CO₂ streams from capture through transport and storage, allowing operators to detect trace impurities and maintain process integrity.

The company said the system is delivered as a modular, fully engineered analyzer shelter, designed to simplify procurement and installation while ensuring measurement consistency throughout the CCUS chain.

“CCUS operations need a broad range of measurements that require a suite of highly sensitive technologies,” said Jacques Mulbert, president of ABB’s Measurement & Analytics division. “ABB has the unique capability to fully engineer and integrate these technologies into industrial shelters, drastically reducing cost and engineering time whilst delivering high-performance and reliable turnkey CCUS solutions to its customers,” Mulbert added.

Each component of the system targets different measurement needs. The Sensi+ CCUS analyzer detects critical contaminants at low concentrations with minimal interference, while the GCP100 chromatograph identifies gases that cannot be measured using infrared methods. The ACF5000 CCUS analyzer provides broad-spectrum monitoring using infrared spectroscopy, allowing operators to measure multiple CO₂-related components in demanding environments.

In addition to real-time measurement, the system is supported by ABB’s global service network and digital monitoring tools, including AI-supported device health diagnostics and condition monitoring platforms. The solution can also be integrated with ABB’s CCS 360 digital twin platform, which enables operators to plan and optimize carbon capture infrastructure over its lifecycle.

ABB said the integrated analyzer package is designed to help accelerate decarbonization efforts in sectors where emissions reductions are difficult to achieve, supporting the broader deployment of carbon capture technologies worldwide.

ABB, headquartered in Switzerland, is a global electrification and automation company with approximately 110,000 employees.
